5 Of The Best, Living

Today is the International Day of Yoga, a day which has been celebrated annually on 21 June since 2015. The day aims to spread awareness about the importance and effects of yoga on the health of the people.

I think we all have a mat of some description lying around the house. Whether you’ve use this for your home workouts over the last couple of months, or you’re a more experienced yogi who’s looking to upgrade their kit before the studio’s re-open next week, there are many benefit’s in choosing a more eco-friendly yoga mat.

Yoga mats are regularly made from plastic PVC (polyvinyl chloride) – a toxic chemical – that produces cheap products but, when exposed through skin contact and inhalation, can pose serious health risks but are also extremely damaging to the environment.

PVC is well-known to be hormone disruptor, and are known to produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife. With regular use plastic yoga mats breaks down quickly and cannot be repaired or recycled, meaning that the only option is to put these in to the trash. The material has been found to leak chlorine, carcinogens and other toxic chemicals into the soil and air over time within landfill or incineration disposals.

Looking after your mind and body shouldn’t come with a price, so it’s worth making the switch to an eco-friendly yoga mat. Here are 5 of our favourites so that you can calm your mind and feel zen.
